| Like most farms, we have an assortment of animals, all of which keeps us quite busy, but thoroughly entertained as well! There's nothing better in the world to ease the pain of hard physical labor than watching our critters interact with each other! Like children, they all have their own unique personalities. If we could carry a camera with us at any given moment, by now we could have captured enough photos to make even the most dedicated animal photographer jealous! So what's so special about Irish Dexter Cattle? Why a Dexter is only one of the finest cattle breeds' that God ever created! Lol! After spending hours and hours online researching the options, we concluded that Irish Dexter's were by far the best choice for our farm. Dexter's come in three colors, Black, Red, and Dunn. Although we are especially fond of Dunn's and Red's, we intend to keep an assortment of colors in our growing herd. Dexter's come, horned and naturally polled. We prefer the horned variety as it is an attractive feature and being non-aggressive in their nature, rarely do their horns intimidate us! They are very good natured and trainable animals and they are considered to be multi-purpose cattle. Their meat is rich and well marbled and their milk is just as delicious! They are naturally, the smallest of all European cattle breeds and are not hybrids! They are an heirloom breed originating in Ireland and their written history has been recorded since about the 1830's. It is thought that they were brought to America as early as 1850. Dexter's are hardy in nature, and have become more popular in the Southern parts of the country where summer temperatures can be quite oppressive. They also do well in Northern climates. They thrive on a variety of vegetation and pasture that other breeds of cattle may turn their noses up at. Typically, they are not confined, grain-fed cattle, as rule. Dexter's can produce milk and beef that would be the envy of Angus and Jersey breeders alike! Although they are in stature, they are strong like oxen and even used as such. Their gentle and curious personalities make them by far one of the most trainable of all cattle breeds'. Like any animal, it helps to begin training at the earliest age possible. We work with our cattle daily and the rewards of doing such are astonishing to our friends and neighbors. Below you'll see pictures of our Bull and Heifer being lead calmly about by my husband and myself. Believe it or not, there are times when our cattle behave more like man's best friend than our dogs do!! |
